Give to organizations with local roots. Of course as a general rule of thumb, donors should always conduct background research on an organization before making a charitable donation. In the case of emergency relief and rebuilding efforts, it is especially important to find out whether an organization was invested in the long-term sustainability of the country long before the earthquake hit. If so, they are more likely to have ties to local networks and to have earned the trust of local communities. Donors should look for organizations that employ and are led by local people and others with cultural expertise and have a proven record of success in disaster relief.
