It is a story that begins each time a child is born into unimaginable poverty in Haiti and is told over and over again from the slums of Port-au-Prince to the rural villages. It’s a story of hunger so severe that children cannot attend school or sleep peacefully at night. It’s a story of homelessness, violence on the streets, unsafe drinking water, debilitating diseases, and family abandonment and neglect. These conditions disproportionately impact the most vulnerable members of Haitian society, the children. As their heartbreaking story continues so must the story of Mercy & Sharing.
Mercy & Sharing has been operating in Haiti for 15 years. We employ more than 160 Haitians in our operations there. The passion and mission of Mercy & Sharing is simple; to provide hope and opportunity to the abused, abandoned and disabled children of Haiti. We do this through a variety of relief and development programs which are funded predominantly by private contributions.
Orphanages:
At Mercy & Sharing’s new Williamson Campus, we have two Orphanages housing more than 106 healthy and disabled/terminally ill children. They are given nutritious food, fresh water, clothing, shelter, education and above all, love. With roughly 70 % of our children disabled or terminally ill, we have implemented a robust physical therapy program that is greatly improving their quality of life.
Proper Nutrition:
The Mercy & Sharing Feeding Programs have saved the lives of literally thousands of children and elderly folks who otherwise would not have food to eat. The feeding program operates at the Mercy & Sharing schools, clinic, orphanages, Abandoned Baby Unit and 2 small villages in the Cap Haitian area of northern Haiti. We have more than 5,100 beneficiaries in our programs and will provide more than 830,000 meals in 2009.
Education
Mercy & Sharing gives more than 630 children a chance at a better life through our School Programs. We have 3 schools; The John Branchizio School in Cazeau, the Cite Soleil school in Cite Soleil and the orphanage school at the Williamson Campus. The children are given school supplies, books, clean drinking water, and as a part of our feeding program—a hot meal five days a week, even during the summer time. Mercy & Sharing also pays the salaries of the teachers and owns and operates the facilities.
Medical Care
The Mercy & Sharing Mobile Clinics treat several hundred patients a month. The clinics are the hubs for all Mercy & Sharing medical outreaches, treating everything from typhoid, tetanus, hepatitis, malaria, urinary tract infections and the myriad diseases that are the devastating result of chronic malnutrition and starvation. We also have a robust vaccination program we operate in conjunction with the Haitian government where we vaccinate for diseases like Rubella, polio, tetanus and others.
