Abandoned Children's Unit

The only public hospital in Port au Prince is operated by the Haitian Government and is known as the General Hospital. For several years, Susie had been going to the General Hospital to hold and feed the babies there, who are cared for in terrible conditions. During one visit, Susie discovered a room where the abandoned children were held in jail-like conditions. Doomed to a life in a tiny crib, many of these children simply died due to lack of water or food, or due to simple medical problems such as diarrhea or fevers. The ones who survived were often crippled from being held in small cribs where their little arms and legs atrophied.

FMS has successfully built and is currently operating a Nutrition Center in Cite Soleil where FMS provides the only meals for up to 60 children a day. The Nutrition Center also provides counseling support for these children and their mothers (as most are unmarried or single parents).

After many months of difficulties with the administration of the General Hospital, FMS obtained the agreement of the General Hospital and Social Services for Haiti to operate a facility out of the hospital to feed and treat the abandoned children. A room in the hospital was obtained by FMS and the operation has been running seven days a week. FMS currently has approximately 10 children in the Abandoned Children's Unit, who get regular meals, medical care, medicine, and who are held every day by loving helpers (primarily Haitian women) paid by FMS.
