The Government Hospital in Port-au-Prince has allowed the Mercy and Sharing Foundation to operate an abandoned childrens’ unit in a room located behind the Pediatric Ward. While we are not allowed to employ our own doctor we are permitted to staff the room with 7 employees, 5 "house" mothers, a runner and a nurse supervisor. We are in the process of forming a new cooperation with Dr. Seino, a Cuban neurosurgeon, who will be performing surgery in the future on five of our babies and toddlers who have hydrocephalic syndrome. This unit cares for terminally ill and handicapped newly abandoned children. Our goal when we receive a new child in this facility is to obtain the necessary government documents in order to transport the child as soon as the child is healthy to one of our orphanages. Due to the fact that we are not permitted total control of the unit it remains impossible to keep provisions and supplies from being stolen and the conditions are not up to our standard. However we continue to do as much as we can to sustain the lives of these children so they can be removed as soon as possible to a healthier environment.
